The Charterhouse of Calci (Pisa) , founded in 1366 on the slopes of
Monte Pisano in
Val Graziosa, is one of the most important Carthusian monasteries in Italy, as well as being a monumental complex of significant importance. The secluded location allowed its isolation from the rest of the world, established by the Rule of the Carthusian Order, founded by San Bruno in 1084. The complex was subsequently enlarged between the 17th and 18th centuries and transformed into the beautiful Baroque residence that we can see today to admire.
In 1972, the last Carthusian left the Certosa which thus became the National Museum, while in 1979 the western part of the complex was assigned for perpetual and free use to the
University of Pisa, which founded the
Museum of Natural History there.
Today, inside the
Charterhouse of Calci we therefore find two distinct museums:
National Museum of the Monumental Charterhouse of Calci and the
Museum of Natural History of the University of Pisa.
